As part of a recent set at the book launch of poet Chris Gage's collection 'I Am Happy To Stride Boldy Through Dark Places' I had 4 audience members record 4 words each into the sampler. Words that jumped out of them from one of the poems in the book.

Then, inspired by the 'Cut-up' technique as pioneered by William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin I used the words to perform a cut-up piece mashing the words together in random patterns. The experiment was intended as a kind of digital sound-poem / sound collage, inspired by sound poets such as Bob Cobbing and plunderphonic-esque artists like Carl Stone and the noise edits of John Wiese / Sissy Spacek.

The piece performed at Smokey Joe's (Cheltenham) for Chris' book launch was intended as a one off, unique piece, however a couple of days on I felt it would be a shame to wipe the samples without recording a couple of studio versions. I'll let you be the judge of how successful these experiments are! Enjoy!
